While many people may think that custom special effects teeth are mainly used in films that involve monsters and aliens, that’s not always the case. We’re often asked to collaborate on films where teeth are needed for different reasons: to represent a particular period in history where dental hygiene wasn’t that great, for example, or simply to change the look of an actor or actress’ real teeth to make them more suitable for the film in question.
Due to be released in May 2014 in the UK, Edge Of Tomorrow was one such film. Starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in the two lead roles, the film tells the story of a time in the near future in which an alien race has the Earth under attack, with not a single military unit in the world able to defeat them. Lt. Col. William Cage (Cruise) has never fought a day of combat in his life, but is dropped into a battle against this alien force and dies within minutes. Sounds like it could be a short film… but Cage somehow finds himself in a time loop, that means that he is forced to go through the same battle again and again. With every reincarnation, he becomes stronger and more skillful, under the tutelage of Special Forces soldier Rita Vrataski (Blunt) who knows how they should use the time loop to their advantage, bringing them closer to defeating the alien force step by step.
Our task for Edge Of Tomorrow? To create perfectly natural looking teeth for the film’s characters, using high quality medical grade materials, that not only looked fantastic but also allowed them to move their mouths naturally and talk normally – pretty important for any actor! A fantastic project on which to work – we’re looking forward to seeing it once it has been released!
