One of the great things about working in special effects make up and prosthetics is the diversity of the projects, and Fangs FX have been extremely busy working on teeth and other facial prosthetic pieces for some very different TV shows recently.
The first is ITV’s second season of the excellent period mystery drama Grantchester, which stars James Norton and Robson Green (who you may remember from 90’s pop duo Robson & Jerome, where he sang with Jerome Flynn, who now appears as Bronn in Game of Thrones). The first season of this book based series about a crime solving clergyman was extremely well received – averaging 6.6 million viewers per episode – and the second is very eagerly anticipated by fans.
The Grantchester series is based on the Grantchester Mysteries novels by James Runcie, and the upcoming season will include episodes based on the second novel in the series – Sidney Chambers and the Perils of the Night. Sidney Chambers, the titular charismatic vicar turned detective, is played by breakthrough star actor James Norton, who it seems the makers of the show were worried about losing after his rise to fame in the role. For season 2, it seems they had nothing to worry about, with Norton tweeting he was ‘chuffed as punch’ when the project got the green light!
Fangs FX have been involved in the makeup effects for production of the new season, creating a plumper that is used to create facial swelling in a fight scene during one of the new episodes (without wanting to spoil what will happen for viewers!). These kind of television special effects are important to get right, and Fangs FX are looking forward to seeing the resulting scene in the finished, aired show!
